I use a small 50 watt heater in a 45 gallon tank. I prefer to use undersized heaters so if the thermostat fails the heater can't do much harm. So, my thermostat is set at about 79 F, but if it gets too cool at night the heater just keeps the temperature from dropping too far, and by the end of the day it is back at 79 degrees. On normal days and nights the little heater keeps the temperature pretty constant.
