niko, I would recommend spraying on the paint. Either with a spray can or spray gun.

Looks good Ian!

Niko, sorry I did not see your question. Woodfiller may telegraph though, especially with sprayed color. Bondo, used for cars, is better and probably cheaper also. Sprayed finish is noce, but if you don't already have a setup, rooling or brushing is a good option and a good brushed finish can look almost as good. Whatever you do, don't skimp on the finish if looks are important to you. I woudl alos prime the any end grain and join locations/filler a few times, then sand really, really well with 150 and then finally prime the whole thing, lightly sand the paint.

Be sure to post pics!

Stand looks nice, it is all MDF? Did you use and frame for support? What paint?

Thanks everyone. The stand is 3/4 mdf all the way around. I used SEM car paint. High build primer (4 cans), Blue mist paint (4 cans), and low lustre finish to seal the paint (2 cans). In total the paint was about 120 dollars or so.

That stand looks very professional!! You have done a really good job on it.

I am going to build an ADA stand soon to hold a 4ft x 20inch x 20inch tank. Does anyone have any recommendations on what thickness MDF I should use for it?

Mark.

Yes that stand looks beautiful!
But $120 for paint is crazy. I like crazy things

Dennis,

Thanks for the response. We did fill all the gaps, not only the screw holes 2 times now after sanding the wood filler once. I really hope that the wood filler will work. We got rollers and primer. Does the primer need to be sanded before applying the paint? I agree with you - so far the stand looks good and I'll be very disappointed if we mess it up while painting it.

I did not drill the holes to hang the doors. Jason (thatguy) did most of the building. With these doors b/c they are so heavy there was a lot of sagging about 1-2 cms towards the middle. I had to bondo the difference and sand down the sides of the doors so they looked right and fit. That part was hard work. We used 160 degree hinges on these doors. 90 degree hinges would have been better, b/c they have less play.
