Default My 5.5 gal. aquascape

Hi everyone. I wanted to share some pics of my 5.5 gallon planted aquarium that I have at the LFS that I manage. I will try to get some better pics using my tripod that I keep forgetting to bring to work. I think the pics are good enough for some tips, pointers, and questions though.

I must admit, the massive pearling that you may be able to see is there only because I did an 80% water change, which I have been doing twice a week. Anyway here is what I got.

Equipment:
5.5 gal. All Glass Aquarium
2- Coralife 18watt 6700K P.C. fixtures
1- Pinpoint pH controller (I know, a little extreme but I had it laying around at home)
1- CO2 bottle
1- Regulator with needle valve (unknown brand)
1- Aquarium Systems 606 mini jet with an Aquaclear Mini sponge attached to it.

Substrate:
Eco-complete->acrylic divider->Sand

Hardscape:
1 piece of driftwood (which is now almost completely hidden under the Singapore moss)

Plants:
Rotala sp. ‘Colorata’
Riccia fluitans
Vesicularia dubyana
Blyxa japonica
Hottonia palustris
Hydrocotyle sibthorpioides

Critters:
Caridina japonica
Neocaridina sp. II
Otocinclus affinis

In the future I am going to add a school of either Boraras brigittae, Pseudomugil gertrudae or Hyphessobrycon amandae. The latter two are in stock at my shop; however I really like the brigittae. What are your thoughts?

Thanks,

Tim Gross

Hi Jeff. The shop that I manage, All Oddball Aquatics, is in Pittsburgh and is owned by Eric Bodrock. It is a big two story warehouse. Upstairs we have a tropical fish hatchery with ~ 400 tanks. Downstairs is our retail floor and consists of ~ 200 tanks. When I started there about 2.5 years ago, Eric did not do any aquatic plants. I opened his eyes to it and now we have a couple of planted show tanks and a pretty decent selection of aquatic plants. My next step is to talk him into doing saltwater; however I believe his words were “I would rather stick a hot ice pick into my eye than carry saltwater.” Nonetheless I am still confident that in the future we will carry saltwater without the loss of an eye.

Thanks for your comments and questions,

Tim Gross

Hey Tim,
Great photos. However, having seen this tank in person, IMO they don't do justice to the tank's serene beauty.

Tim,

I agree with Bob. You must remember to take your tripod to work with you. Also, are you going to take any close-up pictures of individual plants? It might help to show more detail in the tank.

Thanks for the comments everyone.

Good idea muskak. I will be putting some close-ups of the tank on this thread very soon.

Thanks,
