Hi all! I had to move out of my dorm room last thursday, and so I decided to re-scape my tank. I want to know what you think and any suggestions are more than welcome. It's a pretty low-tech tank, I am also restricted financially, being a student.
Specs: 13 watts for 10 hours, dose kent fertilizers 2 times per week. That's about it. It houses 5 White Cloud Minnows, 1 Gold White Cloud Minnow, 2 Otocinclus, 5 dwarf frogs, and some ghost shrimp. The plants are Contortion and Corkscrew Vals in the back, Anubias os the left, Crypts on the right, and some Java Moss. Thanks! Oh, these pics are from Thursday night right after I finished planting, so they are a tad blurry.

overall
my crypts, about the only thing I can grow : )

also, what kind of crypt is this?

I'm trying to decide if I should take my vals back to the lfs, they're not really growing. Maybe trade for a java fern or two. Any other easy plant ideas?

I would go with Java ferns for you drift wood. And if you can find some, Jungle Vals for the background or Wisteria. Those are really easy to grow plants.

Some giant hygro or some hygro costata would look really nice in there too. As for the foreground I would go with some dwarf sag.

wisteria melted in my old eclipse 12 with the 13 watts of light.

I did great with ludwiga repens, annubias nana, amazon sword and crypts.

Welcome to AB and hope you will find many things helpful. I totally understand how it feels when moving from dorm to dorm or from dorm back home. It would take me almost 3 hours for the trip from Austin back to Houston, during which my fish would have the roller coaster ride of their lives.

I think this is a nice, small tank to start with, especially when you live in dorm. Those are all pretty easy-to grow plants. An easy advice I can share with you is to trim off any older or worn out leaves. Usually that would change the look of the layout quite nicely. For me, I usually have a design in my head before I start, however, it rarely stays that way as time goes by. So, I think you will find the look of your tank change and maybe even prefer those changes. Good luck and once again, welcome to this great hobby
