Default My 45 Gallon - The Mound

Well, ive had this tank running for about 2 weeks and have already had every problem imaginable. The current one is an attack of hair/thread algae and a leeking CO2 cylinder, thats why i have the Nutrafin running at the moment. Ive also got the Egeria in there to help fight the algae and about 6 tiger shrimp to clear up. And the background needs sorting, its just there for the picture, i also have a pot of HM wating to be planted, as you can see in the picture. Any critique/comments welcome!

I'm not sure if I would have planted the Egeria densa.....it can form a sizable root system, so it could be a pain to get out.

You probably want to re-adjust the photoperiod down to about 8 hours a day....it will help with the algae problem. Or, you could add an hour "break" period halfway through the photoperiod.

New tanks can be tricky to set up, Lowee! Just keep at, and everything will be fine, I promise!

Ok i will take that out and just rest it above the surface. I currently have a 10 hour photo period, 5 on - 2 off - 5 on. I also recieved some water wisteria tiday and will let that rest above the substrate aswell, i guess it will be a while before i plant the HM!

Tricky....don't let too much light get blocked out, or your hairgrass will suffer!! I know...it's a pain!

I would plant the HC now so it can spread and start sucking up nutrients away from the hair algae. Have you tried treating the algae with hydrogen peroxide yet? That will kill it and leave your plants unharmed if you don't "overdo" it!

Well, its been a fair while since ive been around here, so i thought i'd give you an update! After spending a lot of time abroad last year, the tank was almost forgotton about. I reduced the lighting and stopped dosing EI. I rarely even found time to do water changes, but surprisingly none of the tanks inhabitants had any problems.

I won't be going away again for a while now, so started to get the tank running again. I stripped all of the plants apart from the hairgrass, rotundifolia and HM and went to the lfs to pick up some new Tropica plants. I bought two pots of Polysperma, a pot of polysperma 'rosanervig' and a pot of hygrophila siamensis. Then planted them along the back of the tank, and some of the old rotundifolia in and around the wood.

I'm pretty happy with how its looking at the moment, and should look a lot better once the new plants have filled out. Im also hoping to buy some more mid-ground plants to place infront of the new ones and infront of the wood. I still need to top the tank up a bit more and clean the glass!

All comments are welcome!
