I want to make a rolling hills type layout with crypts, just want to know how people make aquascapes without the sloped hills going anaerobic. Iwagumi aquascapes usually have large mounds of substrate built up around the stones, and most of them use ADA substrates...Is there any way to achieve the same thickness with sand or coarse sand and stil have healthy plant growth?

My vision is to have built up areas with a lot of cryptocoryne Wendtii, some kind of substrate to form the hill and mineralized soil in the top inch of substrate to feed the plants...without everything going anaerobic! Any help would be very appreciated
