Default Trimming stemmed plants and the "blah" period

I was looking at pic cascading bolbitis thread and an old question popped in my head.

First, the said picture...

How would one trim the stemmed plants in a tank like this? I read Amano just cuts them back and the tank will look "blah" for about a week or two while the new shoots grow back.

Does anybody have a different method where the scape does not have to go thru a "blah" period.

This is the reason why I tend to stick to rosette plants and slower stemmed plants in my setups.
