Default Low-light, low-tech 20 gallon: comments, please

This tank is about 2 months old.

I was trying for a triangular composition, but until the amazon and the aponogeton grow to maximum height, I have to settle for the mound.

Right now, I have anubias and a dwarf ozelot sword in the front, red ludwigias and bacopas in the mid-ground, and the water sprite, amazon and aponogeton in the back.

The driftwood is actually 2 pieces. Hopefully, the java fern will grow and hide those sawed-off branch tips.

In the pix, I have 2 filters. I have removed the internal filter on the right, to encourage the plants around it to grow.

Yes, I know the background isn't regulation black. I'll take it out soon.

How can I improve the aquascaping?

Red face

Now, I realize I'm a newbie who has unwittingly jumped into the deep end of the pool. My scruffy aquascape is a tadpole pond compared to the gardens being discussed here.

Can someone please help me move this thread into the kiddie pool, where I can benefit from some adult supervision?

Heh, don't feel bad. I don't have problems growing any plants, but when it comes to aquascaping, it looks like I threw them up in the air and where they landed I planted them. Maybe one day it will hit me.

My friend you are in the right place so please don't feel bad, just like other forums you will find many "experts" with rather harsh critiques, but over all we are good people and we can help you one way or the other.
Your idea of a triangular design is good, so stick to that plan. I noticed that the substrate is kind of shallow and Echinodorus like a little room to stretch their root so keep this in mind. When the fertilization is optimal plants will grow so keep an eye on that ozelot in the center.
Regards,
Luis

Thanks for the advice. I really appreciate it!

I intend to upgrade to a 30 gallon tank this weekend (I know, it's not much, but that's all the space I have). I'll get more substrate and give that ozelot the room it needs.
