We hold a mini auction every meeting for BAP and HAP points which are donations to the club. We pay for speakers with the money made from these donations.
We just need more club members to join the fun! |

Plant Points: 10150 | Re: Rainbowfish in OHIO! What our club has done with many speakers is to buy the fish or plants and then auction them off. Usually it works best to offer, say $100 and let the speaker pick the actual items the day of the meeting. they will know what is good. The club intention is to break even $$ and encourage new interest in the hobby among our members and guests. It does take some seed money to get started with something like that, but if you keep people coming back to the meetings, it pays dividends in other ways, more participation in actvities, more auction buyers and sellers, maybe more people buying tickets if you have a monthly raffle. |

We're more into BAP/HAP and getting people involved in breeding and maintaining fish rather than just reselling them. We've done the buying and reselling thing before and it just doesn't work out all that well since our club is still small. We auction of $20 fish for $3 and it croaks. Hardly worth the time and effort. We can't offer fish outside of what people can keep which is outside of what people can breed. We just don't have the base of hobbyists yet.
Anywho, thanks for the suggestions. |

Anywho, thanks for the suggestions. | You're welcome. I guess it is a chicken/egg thing. If you don't have the attendance, you can't expect you will break even. These are fish we are looking for, that would not be normally available at a pet shop. They are fish that members would like to breed, and they do. Many local fish clubs have wound down on BAP/HAP, but this one still has good participation and it is still likely to have an eight foot long table pretty much filled with BAP and HAP submissions most any month. One reason might be the club is where members can find fish they want to breed. The club is where planted tank keepers can find new plants month after month. So people come and people participate. |
