Default Hello From South Jersey

Hello everyone!!
I've been hanging around these forums for years and never noticed that there was a local group.
Although I live just across the river from Philly (I was born and raised there) I'm up and down the Expwy. frequently. I do a lot of work in King of Prussia and West Chester etc.
I have 5 tanks, all heavily planted, and although I've spent a lot of time keeping higher light tanks, most of mine are now in the 2 - 3.5 wpg range. I find I can grow most to the plants I like under CF fluorescent at that wattage with far less stress over closely watching balance that higher lighting requires.
It's nice to know that there are so many planted tank folks living in this area.
Thanks for listening.

Len

Hey Len,

Thanks for introducing yourself. We have a great group of people here at dvaga. Hopefully you can make it to a meeting. PM me with your email so that we can put you on the club contact list.

I think a lot of us follow your thoughts about lower light and stability. Most of us use that methodology with success, even in our super hard water

Hope to hear from you and nice to meet you.

Len,

You will be getting involved with a great group of people here. I live a couple hours away and made the trip to the last meeting and can say I thouroughly enjoyed it, and if I can get some good directions to the August meeting, I will probably be there. Hope to see you then

Thanks for the kind words folks.
JB, I sent you a PM.
Kurt, I have a son living in Lancaster and you must really like the club to come all that distance.
I stop at That Fish Place on my way out to see him occasionally. One of the best LFSs in the east.
My latest focus is on propagating Hemianthus Callitrichoides for the purpose of experimenting with different methods of getting the stuff to stay on the substrate until it's nicely rooted. If anyone has any knowledge or experience with this plant, I'd be very interested to hear any feedback on it.

Hey Len. Nice to meet you. JB has been pretty sucessful at raising HC. I never seem to get it started well enough to keep it going. My most recent tank is also in the 2-3 watts per gallon range. It's a nice change from the 5 plus over the 55 I recently tore down. I'm enjoying my free time so much I went out and got a puppy. I'm a glutton for punishment. Look forward to meeting you.

Hi Len,

Welcome!

For planting HC, it's easier to plant it in a substrate with finer particles(also much better for HC to root). I also have planted HC on Floutite before, I just simply planted a big bunch(wasted some underground) to make sure it stays and then waited for it to spread. It could grow to many different shapes depends on how you plant it at the beginning(that's the fun part about HC).

That's just my experience.

Thanks for the welcome and the advice. I have no experience with this plant and any help is appreciated.
Currently I am floating it under good light an with plenty of nutrients and CO2 with the hope that I can grow it out, because I can't afford to waste any with the limited amount I have. My substrate is all Flourite so I might have to 'bury' a bit of it, as you mentioned, to get the rest to root.
