I don't know if there's a real preference. A lot of it is a matter of what you have lying around, and how much time/money you're willing to put into it. I used PVC mainly because I like goofing around in Home Depot/Lowes and this gave me another excuse. But it would have been a lot cheaper if I had scavenged through the garage and cobbled something together...but where's the fun in that?
The gravel filters are best used internally. THe PVC is preferred for external reactors where the system is pressurized.
