I have a wet/dry filter in use on my planted aquarium. I was told that this is no good for a planted tank due to the loss of CO2. Will this work if I stick to the hardy plants such as anubias, java fern and moss, cryptocorines, etc? Will I have not luck with sword plants? I don't supplement with CO2 currently. I was told to plug my tank and get a canister filter if I was going to have any luck with plants and ward off algae growth. Now I am at 2.4 watts/gal of light.

How big is the tank? It doesn't make any difference whether or not you use wet/dry filter since you don't inject CO2. I would recommend injecting CO2 if you have 2.4wpg.

What kind of wet/dry do you use (sump)?

My tank is a 54 gal. corner bow front tank by All Glass Aquariums. It came pre-drilled for the wet/dry filter. The filter has the bioballs and sump and I use a pump in the sump to pump the water out. As the water flows into the filter from the tank, I have a box that lays above the bioballs. In this box I have activated charcoal and a filter pad. I don't remember the brand name of the filter because I've had it for a few years but the system is really neat since the tank came ready made for such a filter. I just decided to try plants now because I want a more natural looking aquarium and I am tired of plastic!

I know exactly what you're talking. It's the same setup as many acrylic with built in wet/dry. Wet/dry will outgas a bit CO2 but not much at all. Many people inject CO2 and still use it. It just takes a bit more injection.

Just try without CO2 since your choices of plants are quite simple. Swords should be fine in your set up. You just need to get root tablets for crypt and swords. If algae starts to take over, you may want to consider injecting CO2.

Remove the carbon and get some stem plants also like Moneywort and anacharis. They will help sucking up nutrients to suppress algae growth.
