I'm getting ready to setup a planted tank... should I use a 48x18x25 tank or a 48x18x28 tank? Visually, the extra 3 inches looks nice. I'm planning on using a 2x150 MH HQI with 2x24 T5 so, I should have enough light for the extra depth.

I had nearly the same question recently. I was thinking about either a 75 or 90. I'm going to go with the 75. Are you deciding between a 90 and an 110 x-high?

I got some very interesting feedback about tank height, and stand height, etc.

Here is the post:

hope this helps!

Interesting observations in your post. Seems like everyone had difficuly working in a tall tank. Other than that, I don't see any reason to debate the 28" vs. 24" issues. Is that correct?

My stand plus tank need to be at 54" (it has to align with with another piece of furniture in order to keep the mordern/contemporary lines of my living room... so I guess, either way, I will be standing on a foot stool. Infact, I was over at IKEA the other day and scoped out the perfect foot stool. It would fit right inside the tank stand next to the Eheim 2128 fileter, CO2 equipment, Aquatronica Aquarium controller and related powerstrip, large UPS, ballast from the Geisemann System 230 Plus Metal Halide setup and an old mini-desktop computer I will use to collect monitoring data.

The two reasons I would go for a shorter tank is the extra light need for penetration and their harder to work on. BUT It looks like you have that covered. SO the plus to the higher tanks is your plant will not out grow the tank as fast. Go for the taller tank. You can grow some really awesome plant in a tall tank.

Thats was the thought... to go with the 30"

I remembering snorkling down the crystal clear rivers of Bonito (Matto Groso Sul, Brazil) and seeing carpets of large Amazon Sword growing lushly in 3 feet of water. The leaves were the size of pillows (now I'm kidding)
