Hi, Last night, Ms. Walstad, I read your book again and the section regarding the comparisons of different light bulbs on the production of oxygen in plants really caught my eye. You found that Cool White +Cool White combo produced the second most amount of oxygen . I thought it would be great to discuss our own experiences as well as any added experiences after the book was written.

Well Algae Grower, I've found TFC tubes by far the best as regards a combination of plant growth and fish color. Next in line would be the Osram Biolux tubes followed by the (but actually on par IMO) the Phillips New Generation and then the Osram Daylight.

I tried cool white once and while growth was good I found color of the tubes also favored algae growth... then again the tank was "young" and maybe out of balance.

What I wrote in book has not changed.
That is, I use window light plus two fluorescent lights (one cool-white and one aquarium/plant type bulb that gives off pinkish tinted light). I use this lighting because it is relatively inexpensive and provides pleasing color to the tank.

However, many other light sources will give decent plant growth. I see no need to try to seek out special bulbs and brands.

I use 24" cool white tubes that cost $3.00 a piece instead of $10-$15 for the plant-daylight bulbs. My plants are growing like weeds.
