The massive water changes that you describe won't hurt. However, I've found that they don't really help that much to reducing green algae in this situation.

My suggestion. Do a 70% water change once a week. In the meantime, seek out pond suppliers or ask your aquarium store to order Water Sprite, Frog Bit, Duckweed, Water Soldier, etc.
