Hi, all. I'm getting ready to convert my 55g from a combo fake & live plants to all live. My biggest question right now is making sure I order the right amount of gravel for my top substrate level (with potting soil beneath).

I'm going to be ordering the gravel online, and I want to be sure I get enough but not too much (and avoid unnecessary shipping charges for extra weight, or having to order twice because I didn't get enough). Substrates all seem to be sold by weight, and I need to figure out how many pounds of gravel I'll need for a 1.5" layer in a 55g tank.

In other words, say you want to put 1.5" of very small gravel (1 - 3mm sized) over 1.5" of potting soil. How much gravel (in pounds) would you need to do that for a 55g? The volume for that, btw, is 12" x 48" x 1.5" = 864 cu. in

Is there a rule of thumb for figuring this out? Thanks in advance for any help!
