Hi there,

I was just curious what type of filters you low tech types use with your tanks, especially when you use topsoil in your substrate.

Does this clog up your filter eventually or do you just try to keep from stirring things up too much?

I have a Fluval 404. I threw out the convoluted tubing it came with and MacGyvered two intake/output with PVC tubing, pipe, and some strainers. Would this be too "high tech" for such a project?

Dear Galactic Blue,

You'll have to enlighten me about what kind of filter a Fluval 404 is.

I try not to stir things up when digging around in the tank. I turn off the filter, etc.

Last weekend I did some major thinning out of rooted plants in the 45 gal and made a real mess. But the tank cleared up, and my canister filter is still running. I'll probably clean it out this weeken to make sure it didn't get clogged.

I think that you just have to get used to working with soil and feel comfortable with it. I (and many home gardeners) like working with soil; it's so real.

I think you ulimately answered Galactic's question. I can't help but find it humorous that you didn't know what a Fluval 404 was and then said your canister works fine.

BTW the Fluval 404 is a canister filter. It's the next gen Fluval 403.
