I don't know about the pickier red plants, but you can get some reddish coloring in a NPT. First, is your tank getting any sunlight? I have had a 29 gallon NPT in front of a southern window for nearly a year and the sunlight is definitely a must for me to get red. I have red melon sword, Kleiner bar sword (the new leaves are red, then turn bronze), and Ludwigia repens. They all lost color during the dark days of winter, but are coming back into their color now that they have more light. The red melon sword gets deep red leaves that gradually turn green as they mature. The L repens likes to face the window so I see the reddish backs of the leaves rather than the green tops. I think a Nymphaea (lotus plant) would also do well in a NPT. I did have a red-tinged vallisneria that was a lovely color, but it continually tried to take over the tank so I tossed it. Also, red-root floater is a great floating plant that does turn red in my NPT.

Yes I agree, many of the red swords are definitely compatible with low tech. I have something labeled echinodorus 'rubin' in my NPT quarantine tank that has about the darkest red/maroon leaves I have seen in an aquarium. The older leaves green up a bit, but still stay mostly reddish.

I had some rotala rotundifolia (often called rotala indica) in a small NPT which had pinkish new growth at the tops. It was pretty well lit for an NPT though. I think under lower light it stays mostly green.

I Also have a red sword plant, a Red martii, and its doing well. I moved it from normal gravel to my new npt and it suddenly grew 3 VERY red leaves. Also, an Apongaton thats red, and red Val thats native to the Howard river in australia. So far everything is very red. It gets a little bit of sun in the morning, and only has about 1.75 wpg. so yeah... i think its possible.

I have some Alternanthera reineckii 'rosaefolia', and it's staying a decent shade of red. Also, my red tiger lotus is staying fairly red.

I grow very red A. reineckii and pink rotala rotundifolia in my low-light, non-CO2 nanos. The tanks are not true El Natural (inert substrates and more frequent water changes), but I don't see any reason why the addition of a nutrient rich substrate would hinder these plants. One of the tanks, a 2.5g, gets sunlight in the evening from a North-facing window.

There are also crypt species that get very striking purple undersides if the conditions are right.

It is possible. Good luck to you.
