I know this sounds stupid but is it normal to have fine, hair-like roots coming up from the soil into the gravel were you can clearly see it? Lately, I've noticed that I have a lot of thin roots coming up through the gravel. Before I put tape along the bottom to cover the substrate, you could clearly see a ton of roots in the soil but they seem to have moved up through the gravel.

I just wanted to know if this was a normal part of a NPT?

I've seen this with L. repens (quite quickly) and also the C. wendtii (after a much longer time), in my tank, but the L. repens definitely had a lot more really fine hair-like roots. It almost seems like they're trying to take over the substrate to give themselves room to grow and prevent neighbours from moving in.

What kind of plants are doing this in your tank?

I only have one stem of Ludwigia glandulosa so I know it's not that. The roots are around my Wisteria and Cryptocoryne lutea. All of them are growing well.
