Default Driftwood solution?

Picked up a huge piece of drifted for my 40 breader. It was sitting in water for about two months but attached to a piece of slate. I figured it would be water logged but I took it off the slate and it floats!

Do I give up on this piece or maybe hot glue it to the bottom (glass) of the tank to keep it in place? I don't want to keep it on the slate since this may cause issues with the soil being compacted.?

Any solutions for still using this piece?

Put it back on the slate.
Put the slate on the bottom of the tank, before the substrate.
Put the substrate on top of the slate.
