Trying the Dry Start Method and Mineralized Soil with glass bits (2mm - 4mm sized smooth black glass bits / beads) as topping in 40 gallon breeder as new project and I need lighting advice. I will only be planting foreground / carpeting plants and allowing them to grow for the first 6 - 8 weeks followed by additional plantings and filling the tank as it should be cycled by then. I have purchased a 36" Deep Blue Solarmax T5HO light fixture 2 X 39 watts with LED moonlights and will suspend it on a homemade hanger using garden shepherd hooks. I went with the higher wattage (21 watts vs 39 watts)and HO vs NO due to the fact that I can hang the light at any height to achieve the lighting I need (for example 10" - 12" above will provide medium light). I do not want to limit the types of plants I can use for the tank even though I will not be using CO2 and when I upgrade to a larger / deeper tank I should not have to buy another light fixture. Any suggestions or advice would be greatly appreciated. :D

I'm starting to see some algae in my 40 breeder. I recently won a long battle with blue/green cyano using a low dose of erithromycin, and the tank has just started looking better. Some basic tank info:

tank is a 40g breeder. filtration is a sunsun canister, tank usually runs at 79F or so. lighting is 3X26watt spiral compacts about 65 or 55K. substrate is a mix of playsand and eco-complete (mostly eco)

plants in the tank are:
sunset hygro
some other morph of hygro (possibly just a different morph on sunset)
java fern
java moss
a few different crypt species
2 of what look like some sort of val
anubias nana
very small red tiger lotus
rotala rutondifolia

fish are:
2 male guppies
1 male dwarf gourami
1 highfin german blue ram
5 harlequin rasboras
at least 3 panda cories (possibly 4 or 5, but only see 3 right now)
6 cherry barbs (2m/4f)
1 large male platy
there are also multiple hithiking snails which include both blue and red ramshorns I'd like to save
(plans for additional fish are a female ram, either 1 male OR 2 female gouramis, and perhaps a pleco like a snowball, rubberlip or bristlenose).

question 1 is whether or not I should add DIY CO2 to the tank? diffuser is a powerhead. I was planning to start off with 1 2L bottle and 1 1L bottle and possibly go up to 2-4 2L bottles. my impression is that the DIY CO2 won't do much/doesn't have any cons, but does it have any pros? keep in mind even slightly increased plant growth would be a pro for me.

two more questions:
1- I'm starting to notice what looks like hair algae (fine, green strands) in some parts of the tank. it's very fine, a pretty standard shade of green, and has very long strands. how should I proceed to get rid of it?

2- if an algae eater is suggested, what would be the best choice? I was thinking about adding a rubberlip, snowball pleco, or maybe bristlenose pleco anyways. would ottos be better?

3- would shrimp be an option with my stock? I'm assuming no because of the ram and gourami. I was thinking cherries, maybe some ghost and/or amanos as well. nothing too expensive.

Hi everyone!

In the photos you can see "something" that's trying to take over my tank.
25yrs with aquarium and I've never seen anything like it. Water parameters are as good
as should.

The color of this "algae" or whatever it is, is kind of sickly grey. It started by growing over all stones (gneiss) which I didn't (unfortunately) worry about since it made stones look more like they've been under water for longer time. But then it started to grow on driftwood as well and right after appeared into the plants, especially the slower growing ones. AAAGH.

It obviously thrives under intense light. In the driftwood photo you can see that on the underside there's no grey patches at all and in the stone photo you can see the left side of the stone that was under the gravel all the time, right side being "infected" with the cursed thing.

Can anybody please identify this nuisance
- and if yes, recommend some swift maneuvers to get rid of it?

I am just about to set up my new tank and am a bit concerned that I could be introducing too many plants at one go, is this possible? Should I really stagger their introduction like fish?

The basic situation is:

The tank is 6 1/2 feet long about 20 inches front to back and 2 feet deep (654 litres, 145 imperial gallons, 175 us gallons), the lighting is looking like 2 t8 30w proper tubes (5000k 1A) and the option for another t8 ordinary 30w tube on just one side (actually mabe the option for more), a fluval fx8 filter (which is capable of dealing with a tank twice the size), 2 30w heaters.

I know the lighting isn't as strong as it might be, if it's way off what should it be for healthy plant growth (I suppose the plants I buy wont be fully grown), if it's relevant I also have an air ball pushing some oxygen into the top of the tank, the hardness of the water is about 20d or 358ppm. The temperature of the tank is about 24/25c. I have a co2 thing you put sugar and yeast in.

I'd like quite a lot of healthy looking plants (hard to define, but the usual set up I suppose of tall plants at the back and clumps at the sides).

Thanks

I wanted to ask if anybody has experience of succesfully combining low-light low-fert plants like java ferns with high-light high-fert demanding plants like f.ex. rotala wallichii/rotundifolia? If yes, how did you do it?

I'm struggling with my bigger leaf java ferns under my 2x150w metal halide lamp. The big leaves "burn" to brown holes and die away. Tank is 60cm high, about 325 litres. The smaller java ferns with leafs ending in "fingers" seem to be doing just fine.
I'm adding daily 10ml CO2 with Easycarbo, and fertilising weekly with 30ml of Easylife Ferro and 30ml of Easylife Profito. Should I just call it a day with the bigger Java Ferns under such powerful light and get some more light/fert demanding/tolerating plant as substitute? Does anybody have any suggestions what plants might be plausible? Epiphytes if possible, because I'm little bit short of bottom surface with all the hardscape around.

Thanks in advance for tips, added a photo to clear out the situation. The smaller ferns were planted right when starting the tank (1 year ago) and the bigger are more recent addition, maybe 3 months ago.

Hi everyone!

Just wanted to introduce myself. My name is Lauren. I am born and raised in northern Virginia, about 30 minutes from Washington DC and now residing in Phoenix AZ for almost 5 years. I really like Arizona. Sunny almost every day! Well, I am still trying to adjust and become more tolerant of the summers here. Starts about may and ends around October. HOT, dry, desert heat! But hey, its worth it!

I have kept fish pretty much my whole life, even as a child. I have had several tanks over the years 36 and 55 gallon setups were the largest. I have kept only freshwater fish myself, but my father had saltwater tanks seperate from mine growing up in our house in VA. We even have a pond/waterfall in the backyard back in VA with Koi.

I have learned alot from the hobby over the years. For me, I have learned bigger tanks are not always better. I have seen some of the most beautiful tanks in small, nano sizes.

I have learned that it is not the fish that make the tank, but the aquascape. Fish are the finishing touch to complement the tank.

Also that i do not care for artificial gravel colors or "decorations" like scull heads and mini scuba divers!
I have found the most peaceful and beautiful tanks to be modeled after nature or bio aquariums modeled after any region. The natural aquarium is what i admire in this hobby.

I am new to the site (but have kept aquarium fish practically my whole life). I have been researching and reviewing info on this site for a couple of months now after I became very interested in keeping a planted aquarium. I just got a 3 gallon all glass nano aquarium.

Any help is appreciated much!

Q: My new tank came with a clamp on lamp fixture that is a 9 watt, half 7100k blue/half 10k white. (Very much in the blue spectum like you may see for saltwater tanks) My tank is 3 us gallons dimensions 11.8"x8.9"x8.1" Is this light sufficient to grow plants? I have plants that are listed in the plantfinder section as easy care but would need to look up the names if needed.

Thank you!
