I am going to try some dwarf hair grass from the wild in one of my tanks but have read different opinions on whether to treat or not before planting. I have some of Jungle's Clear Water, which is a dilute potassium permanganate to use as a dip.
I'm beginning to see large, brown/grey/black blotches on some Java fern fronds in my tank. This eventually spreads to destroy the entire leaf. So far, it's not rampant, but I want to stop it before it gets that way.

About 2 wpg cf, plenty of current, decent fish pop. Supplementing with Excel and iron. Leaves in brighter part of tank definitely a bit yellowed - either iron or N deficeincy?

I've seen this problem mentioned many times over the years - is there some consensus as to the cause? My gut is that this is some effect of a long-term deficiency, maybe also the Excel? Never had trouble with J-fern before...

HELP! and thanks. :)

plant recommandation for 6gallon nanocube

Hi guys, looking to get back into the hobby after a 3 year break, going to go with a nanocube 6g (dont have time for bigger tanks), have a few questions:

1) The nanocube 6 gallon comes with this lighting: http://www.jbjlighting.com/pics/Lo/6g-Nano-Lamp-Lo.jpg However i cannot find a compatible replacement with 6700K temp for freshwater planted, can someone give a link where i can buy them.

2) What kind of plants would you recommend? I plan to keep it very simple, add eco-complete or ada substrates and that's it. No co2 injection, no additional nutrients injection, will probably put a betta or a school of golden white clouds with a few cherry shrimps. Will be using stock 6700k lighting(see 1), so 18W or about 3WPG, but with such a low wattage it's more like 2WPG in a higher wattage/larger tank.

3) Is the tank cracking issue fixed? I know when the nanocube 6g first came out a lot of them were cracked over time, did they ever fix it? i live on the high floor of an apt so if the water leaks it will be a complete disaster.

thanks, cant wait to get back in the hobby *twitches*

Hey guys,

I currently am running a 10 gallon planted tank. I've been going for the iwagumi look. I guess you could say I roughly achieved it. This is how it looks as of right now:

Attachment 10433 (http://www.aquaticplantcentral.com/forumapc/attachment.php?attachmentid=10433)

The question I have is that if I were to try to take everything out and rescape from scratch. Would that mess up the bacteria culture I have in my tank and damage it to where I would have to start to cycle it over? How would I go about trying to rescape it? I want to do something with sand substrate and driftwood. Do you think that's too drastic? How would you be able to plant plants if it's sand substrate? Is that possible? O_o Any nutrients from sand? Or would I have to do something to incorporate my eco-complete in it?

I'm setting up a 90 Gallon Discus tank. I already have a pressurized CO2 system and am purchasing a 4 bulb T-5 fixture for the tank.

What plants do well in the higher temps required for Discus? What should I avoid?

Since I would like to get a bunch of plants started at once (to avoid possible algae problems and such), where would you recommend I look to purchase them?

The local pet stores have decent plant stock, but at their prices it would cost me $500+ for the plants to stock that 90.

TIA.

I have a question about growing sword plants, Amazon, Marbled, Melon's, etc..

In my tank they generally grow long stems with smaller leaves at the top. My tank is 18" deep, and I've seen somProe grow 1 or 2 feet out of the tank. blem is that they never get full underwater, and after a while they end up as long leaf stems, with no more leaves in the water. Obviously, I want traditional swords with large leaves underwater. What is the cause of this?

This is a 75g Discus tank, and has 4x65w CF lighting, all 4 bulbs are 6700K. I use CO2, and substrate fertilizers and nothing else at the time. Tank is kept at about 86, with 2 - 3, 25 - 30% changes per week.

I'm assuming that some parameter isn't in range which is causing the abnormal growth. Anyway, if anyone knows what causes swords to grow like this, or what would contribute to it, I would appreciate it.

found ludwigia repens in my area, cleaning questions

Hi all,

I went down a greenway by my house today (i live in NC), and i found what i believe to be ludwigia repens growing submersed in a ditch. There's a good amount of it, and i'm pretty excited, but i was wondering how to sterilize it. I don't have access to potassium permanganate which i've heard works, so i was wondering if bleach would work.

And also, how should i plant this? I'm trying to grow some now in a lit vase with gravel to see how it does, but if i decided to plant this in my actual tank, should i snip off the tops and plant those? plant the whole stem? or what?

THANKS!!!!

I wanted to correct the light directions in my tank called Incomparable, before I trim the plants. I had recently changed the bulbs and also disrupted some of the wiring because they go through another tank I am constructing (The GLMT). So I have to set everything back, and so I am repositioning the MH lights. I had built this seating arrangement so that I could stay above the aquarium water and work inside the top. The position is as cramped as if you were under a car, but you could still work.

I never really thought about it, but would more surface agitation be the key to getting higher oxygen levels?

little white bugs on driftwood

so the other day i noticed all these white dots on a piece of driftwood. i looked closer and they were moving. scurrying around the surface of the driftwood, some attempting to swim for a few seconds then falling back to the stump. They are maybe a little bigger than a pin head. They are multiplying rather quickly and spreading to other pieces of wood and everywhere else i assume. i dont really see them in the water column, but im sure they are there.

I've poked around on here and havent found a definate answer as to what they are, how they got there, and why they are there. i dont kave a scope, or a magnifying glass.

what is a good way to get rid of them, w/o destroying everything else? I dont really have any small fish in there to eat them. so if i did buy some they would have to go through a months worth of QT. looking for a quicker remedy.

i have a shrimp tank with anubias, java ferns, some sort of crypt and java moss. i trimmed off some leaves from the java fern that didnt look too good. and the rhyzome was longer than i wanted so i split it, one side with 2 leaves and the other with 3. and trimmed some of the roots that where 6+ inches down to like 1.5". now i heard that trimming java ferns and anubias releases some sort of toxin harmful to shrimp. my question is when can i put it back in the tank? i'm planning to trim each plant one by one as to not disturb the tank parameters too much.
