Well im getting to the point of putting everything and finally getting my 72g bow up and running. Im at the last thing to get, which from the title you can see is substrate. I have been investigating all the diffrent types of substrate. From Flourite to ADA's aqua soil. I came down to this being what i am considering and the price isnt to outrageous compared to the others i have looked into. Anyonr have experience with it or thoughts on it? Any input would be appreciated. Heres a link to it, it shows whats all in it and such: http://www.aquariumplants.com/Freshwater_Aquarium_Plant_Substrate_p/ss.htm

blasting grit?

Is there a strong consensus on blasting grit? I am setting up a tank with mineralized soil and had planned on topping it off with Black Diamond blasting grit. I have heard of a handful of people that have used it an like it alot. I then have also heard some of people who don't recommend it. Whats the consensus? I have already rinsed the grit. It had some nastiness come rinse off it. But is rinsing pretty clear now.

The tank is a 20g tall planted tank with boraras masculatas (16) and will soon have RCS (~12) as well. Probably to be rounded out with some otos.

Thanks for you input.

I am planning to setup a 55gal. planted tank and I plan to use earthworm castings for substrate as per Mr. Vladimir Simoes' method .

http://www.barrreport.com/co2-aquatic-plant-fertilization/5633-earth-worm-casting-nutrient-enriched-sediments-how.html

Do I need to use laterite, or I can use red pottery clay instead? If I do need, then how much of it?

Thank you.

I called the closest John Deere landscaper (1 hour away), and they have bags of SMS Red. Before I drive that far, I was wondering if anyone has any pictures of this color in an aquarium?

Thanks,
Gary

Compacted Eco Complete

I recently re-arranged my 10 gallon tank which has had an EC substrate for the past 3 years. However, I was really shocked how much the substrate has compacted. I could barely even scoop out any with my finger. I always assumed my slow growing crypts and DHG were due to lower light, but now I'm thinking the compacted EC may be the culprit. Short of ripping it all up, anyone have any creative ideas for how to "de-compact" the substrate? Anyone run into this issue before?

*Just had a thought...MTS?

plant substrates capped with sand?

Has anyone used plant substrate, such as eco-complete in containers or capped with sand to accomodate fish that like a sandy bottom?

I'm trying to plant a SA cichlid tank with some bottom dwellers that need sand. I'm not sure of how to best achieve this. I have lots of different crypts, and would like to include some stems, vals, and swords for variety.

Thanks-

well i am using eco complete with ro water, the ro water source is good and the ph registers in at about 6.8 to 7.00, when i added the water to my aquaium the water jumped up to 8.3 and has fluctuated between 7.9 and 8.1, with my c02 fertilizing.............my question is this, being that this is a new aquarium , is the eco complete jumping my ph up? and id eventually like to add discus to the tank, will it ever eventually wear off after several water changes? its the eco complete freshwater planted by the way,im shooting for a ph of 6.8 i was hoping with the use of ro water i would not have to take it down artificially with chemicals.
