First attempt at more than just growing foliage

I've gotten fairly good at making most things grow, quite well. I'm taking my first stab at actually aquascaping with a 10 gallon AGA. I spent the afternoon stripping the trim rings and cleaning up the silicone. I slopped a coat of light blue latex on the backdrop, then I plopped in a half dozen generous handfuls of Organic Choice and topped it off with some "multi-purpose" sand I picked up at Lowes. I'm used to using dark substrate, primarily Black Diamond. I figured with a rimless 10 gallon, keeping with the "make it look bigger" theme I should go lighter. Play sand is boring, so I went with this, a much coarser, more natural looking substrate.

Image: http://i242.photobucket.com/albums/ff264/DeathPenalty23/DSC_0168.jpg

I plopped in an old piece of driftwood I had laying around and weighed it down with some pieces of shale. In a few days I'll see if the wood has saturated yet.

Image: http://i242.photobucket.com/albums/ff264/DeathPenalty23/DSC_0166.jpg

I'm leaving it at this stage for at least a week, maybe two. I have the stock on order from some very generous members. Once it shows up I'll decide what goes in here and what gets grown out in my 55. I am thinking a background of rotala "green," rotala macrandra "green," and a splash of rotala "colorata." Some blyxa japonica slong the sides of the stump, and a spotty foreground of echinodorus tenellus.

Specs on the finished tank will be:

10 Gallon AGA, stripped rims
Whisper 5-15 HOB
100w Mercury Vapor pendant
Homebrew CO2 run through Whisper
No dosing required with current substrate

For the moment I did only one trimming but in a few days I need to trim tenellus because is growing so fast and covering the wood that is placed on the middle/foreground.

Greetings all;
I'm wanting to rebuild my 80 gallon tank. Currently it has 1 Red Oscar and 2 common Plecos. They are getting new homes.
I'm thinking of going with a Amazon area dwarf cichlids, Apistogramma genus and some tetras and or rasboras to round things out if they stay with theme.
I plan to stack flagstone making lots of caves and areas to grow live plants. Lots of live plants on a pool filter sand base.
For filtration I have Marineland Mag 350, Penguin Mag 350, Whisper 60. 2 200 wat Stelth heaters.
Water temp is 78 deg.
I have well water and it is very soft 2 KH & 3 GH.out of the tap. I plan to put "peat" in the Mag 350 basket lowering the Ph to about 6.5.
This is what my research has given me for ideas so far

Fish I am considering are (10 or so of each)
    Apistogramma Cacatuoides
    Apistogramma Schwarzsaum
    Apistogramma Steinadchneri
    Apistogramma Macmasteri

Plants
Echinodorus amazonicus (Amazon Sword) (as a centerpiece background)
Heteranthera zosterifolia (Star grass)
Anubias Nana (Dwarf Anubias) (here and there plant)
Zephyranthes candida (Crinum "Dwarf" onion plant) (center)
Lilaeopsis novae-zelandiae(Micro Sword ) (Ground cover)

So have I hit my mark or am I way off?
Are there other more colorful fish or plants that would go better? I'm new at this theme stuff.

It's supposed to look like a deserted island type thing...
Thinking about starting off with either dwarf hairgrass and/or lilaeopsis for the base area to look like the jungle.
Some moss on the cracks of the rock.
Still need some lava rocks to cover the base

Opinions welcomed.

10 gallon rimless

I started this tank after I tore down my old 10 gallon, and replaced it with a brand new rimless 10 gallon. This is what it looked like at the initial planting:
Image: http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y300/ryanyoung51/CIMG0374.jpg

Basically the hardscape is a piece of Mopani wood sitting on top of 3 rocks, and then 1 bigger rock sticking up from behind it.

This picture was taken a couple weeks ago (look how much the Blyxa grew!)
Image: http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y300/ryanyoung51/CIMG0692.jpg

Now there's more of a foreground, and I trimmed the Blyxa (alot). Here's the specs of the tank:
10 gallon miracle baby rimless tank
Eheim 2213
Marineland Stealth Visi-Therm heater
DIY CO2 with Hagen Elite Filter as a diffuser
2x24 watt T5 HO
EI dosing regimine

Plant list:
Blyxa Japonica
Staurogyne sp.
Hydrocotle sibthorpoides...I can't spell that one;)
Rotala Macrandra 'Green'
Polygonum 'Sao Paulo'
Hygro sp. 'Ceylon'
Anubias Nana 'Petite'
2 unknown Crypts

I'll try and get an updated picture up soon...

This is a native Australian shrimp "Chameleon". It changes it's colour all the time, from clear-Maroon-Red-Black-mottled Brown. It grows to about 2.5cm and eat algae. :)
