I have a problem that is starting. I just setup a new cichlid aquarium 2 weeks ago. In the tank I did a all rock setup. Yesterday I noticed some green algae growing on the rock closest to the top of the tank. Since I didn't want to let this problem get out of hand I did a few things. I lowered the lighting time to 8 hours a day, less feeding and added Algae Destroyer. Is there anything else I can do to avoid this on-coming problem???

Don't worry, give your new tank time to settle in. Please don't use a algicide, they are just a temporary solution.

Do you have any plants in the setup?

I really don't like usking algicides either but I just don't want this problem to get out of hand.
I do have a couple plants in the setup. It is a lake Malawi setup with several rocks. I have one very large crypto wendtii, one java fern and one anubias coffeefolia. I'm pretty sure these plants can grow in hard water conditions. My kh and gh are both over 12 and my ph is around 7.5.
Is there anything you can do to stop a take over?
