I'm not much of a discus fan but having kept them in the past they are finicky and a real PITA. They really limit what you can keep with them. If you're currently keeping a syno with discus, consider that the exception to the norm. I wouldn't push the envelope and add more synos. What you need is more tanks!

Actually S.angelicus is from soft and acidic to slightly alkali waters naturally. They come from the Congo River drainage. Much of the water in African rivers is soft to moderately hard, not very hard and alkali. The rock hard waters are mainly held in the African rift lakes, such as Tangyika and Malawi.
However S.petricola is from Lake Tanganyika so it would be a bad choice for a soft water tank.
BTW Synodontis can be territorial IME, especially if two fish want the same cave. At other times they have got on fine so it can vary from fish to fish.
