I'm sorry but I've caught goldfish (often stocked as native crucian carp over here) (and closely related common carp too) right through the night when I used to go fishing so this simply isn't true. Unless the pitiful moonlight on an overcast night over a muddy lake is enough. In which case I think there would be enough light in any tank in any room of a modern house right through the night for the goldfish to be active if they are hungry which seems to be the only real factor IME.
