Question question on fish n colors

OK so im trying to pull some fish together for my planted tank, I was thinking of ether small gouramis(sparkling or anything you think would work) and some schooling tetras(no serpae tetras!). BUT! after some research and reading forums some one said to keep the same color scheme? I was wondering if this is true or its just the fish?

The tank(not set up yet!)
Size: 60p having about 18 gallons of water
Plants(this is a temporary list): Blyxa Japonica, dwarf hairgrass, brazilian Pennywort, moss(IDK about species), and some stem or background plant.

Thanks for any feed back!

Fish, and fish color, is a personal thing. I would keep whatever fish you want and makes you happy. That said, you should make sure that your fish selections are compatible with each other (i.e. that one fish will not terrorize or eat the other fish) and your tank type (i.e. don't put herbivores in a planted tank or discus in a cold water tank).

Fish color and shape is only really important if you're entering the tank into an aquascaping contest where the fish can either add or detract from the overall 'appearance' of the aquascape. Otherwise, just get whatever fish make you happy and that you can make happy.

I like galaxy rasboras (celestial pearl danios). Beautiful but not overpowering like neons.

I prefer pairing fish that are different rather than trying to match them.
Different does not have to be color, though I do like fish of assorted colors. Different body shapes, different habits, different fins... all contribute to interesting tanks.

There may be some colors or some combinations you do not like. If so, don't get them.

Most important are fish that are suited to the system. Water chemistry, temperature, water movement, decor, other livestock...

I have fun with my tanks. In some I have only one species and a clean-up crew. In others I have a mixture. Only in contests does it really matter. As long as they all are safe together in your environment.

I am a huge fan of rainbowfish, specifically the pseudomugil species. They are so active and so colorful. It's very beautiful
