Steve,
Your plan is good, just keep going and on top of things and you will even out. Once the plants grow in well, you should be in good shape.

Just start doing some regular pruning and reworking the tank in sections, keep up on things and it will even out.
You can back off some of the lower light tanks without as much problems but it will take some fiddling and experience to get a feel for how much is "just enough", that's something I cannot tell you over ther web.

But having excess in a lower light tank is less problematic than excess in a high light tank. Neither will have algae issues if you keep up on things.
The low light tank will actually have less problems.

Re-read what Jeff told you.
Pick and clean the plants often till you get things back in shape.
Buy cheapy plants, prune often to keep the plants from over shading.
