I made a little mistake when cleaning my glass diffusor. Instead of soaking it it a weak solution i soaked it in straight bleach. Then I soaked it in water with a good amount of water conditioner/ dechlor. However when I took it out it still smelled of bleach and it looked like bleach was stuck in side the diffusor. So I pulled my co2 like and with the diffusor out of the tank hooked up the co2 line and cranked it up to force the bleach out and it was all bleach. Once it all seemed out i rinsed it real well and resoaked it in dechlor with water but it still smelled bleachy. Now I have it soaking over night in a water/dechlor solution. I am afraid to put it back in my tank just yet. Is the dechlor enough to netralize the bleach. I think the problem is some bleach was still stuck up inside the diffusor (it is a aquatic magic spiro 3) since the water doesnt really get up in there when u soak it. I think the disc was saturated too. you think this second overnight soaking and blow out all the visble liquid stuck in there will be enough? I dont wanna kill all my plants. any ideas?

I would soak it till the smell went away. But next time instead of using bleach to clean it, pull the diffuser above the water line when doing weekly cleaning, and put some H2O2 in it. Leave it like that till you refill the tank, and then push it back under. The algae should die and the disk be clean in about 3-4 days. H2O2 breaks down quickly into water and oxygen, making it harmless.

There's no need to use bleach on a diffusor. Like he said you use Peroxide to clean it. I prefer to use Excel. Pull the diffusor up out of the water during a tank cleaning and fill up the area on top of the disc with the Excel. Let it sit for 5 minutes.

I use excel as mike describes, but every few months I go to the 1:20 bleach solution.

It is hard to get the bleach water out. Instead of wasting co2, I hook up an air pump. Then dip in water, pump, repeat etc. until the smell goes away.
