Default Driftwood Falling Apart

I have found a few pieces broken off from one of my pieces driftwood. The main piece of the wood seems pretty hard still. I have no clue what type of wood it is. I bought it at a decent LFS quite a while ago. I would hate to yank it out as it is my bristlenose's favorite hangout. Do I need to worry about these pieces or is it a pre-cursor of my driftwood beginning to rot?

Photos?

Broken off pieces are different from soft pieces, Do the broken pieces feel squishy? How big are they?

Recently the wonderful piece of driftwood I had in my tank started to get soft and turning the water tea color from the tannic acid. My plecos loved its great hiding spots. I ended up pulling it out but should have done so sooner. My PH dropped and I'm pretty sure that was a major factor. My PH was around 6 before so there wasn't any leaway for a drop.

Pulling it out might be a good idea.
