I don't have a secret, but I can tell you about a potential problem.

I have an open top 80 gallon. I have a large ozelot sword with leaves growing out the top of the tank (I bought it when it was already tall enough to be out of the tank). The leaves out of the water get brown edges and many of them have died. Some of this may be due to the plant getting acclimated to my tank, but I also think the humidity above my tank is too low. The plant continues to produce new leaves, but the new leaves remain underwater. The plant did send out 2 flower shoots out of the water that were about 4 feet long and produced about 10 baby plants. If the plant remains in the tank, with a lowered water level the high humidity may be easier to maintain.

I had, what i believe, Echinodorus palaefolius var. latifolius in a 125 gallon, from all leaves cut to 2' 6" high took a couple months, even though I bent the leaves so they wouldn't get burnt from my 250 W MH It continued to grow larger and send floral stalks even without any direct light. When it reached almost 4' high and had 5 floral stalks about 5' each I took it out. That part of the living room now feels totally different with that plant gone.

I've had a lot of brown edges on a few of the daughter plants, which I also believe is due to low air humidity. The daughter plants I've planted in little higher humidity has very little or no brown leaf edges. But I don't know for sure 'cos other factors also differ. An air humidifier or slightly raised water temperature would probably help.
