Default containing Eleocharis and other spreaders

I like the look of Eleocharis, but I am frustrated by it taking over and going wherever it pleases, especially when it steamrolls smaller plants. Anyone got any good ideas for containing this and/or similar things that spread via rhizomes/runners?

I was thinking about cutting up used butter buckets, ice cream pails, etc.... the width that my substrate is deep and place them in vertically. I may even have them alittle taller and hide them with a border of rocks or some other plant thats is still low but wont be creepin on a come up.

+1 - I've had good experiences with make-shift pots for plants that tend to get out of hand, but mostly larger plants like red lotus et cetera.
