As far as lights go I would suggest looking at the Coralife Freshwater T-5 Aqualight Double Linear Strip. It comes with one each Colormax and 6700K bulbs. It provides enough light for a 30g tank that you won't be forced to use pressurized CO2. You can find them at http://www.bigalsonline.com/BigAlsUS...lestriplight36.

I would really recommend getting a canister filter with inline heater like the the Rena Filstar and SmartHeater combo (which can also be found at Big Al's) but if that isn't in your budget then an AquaClear 50 HOB filter should do.

Welcome to APC! Hopefully you'll become a pro in no time.

It looks like you have begun with the best tank out there. Be careful to get quality equipment to go with it. Rena filters are good. They are reasonably priced. AquaClear filters are also good but they aren't a canister. Why has such a nice tank and then hang a filter on the back? I'd really try to save for a canister if I could.

What you really want to be careful to do is to get equipment that you will use over the years, even if you upgrade. Most people end up with more than one tank and so equipment that works well travels from one tank to the next. Maybe you could ask for some of these things for holiday gifts.

I believe he is starting out with a 36cm not a 36in. Regardless, he is starting out with the best.

Most tanks that small use a clip on light or a free standing light. We went to home depot or lowes and got a free standing light that we could sit beside the tank and aim it over. It worked well.

There is also this tank. I wonder if you could get the clip on light separately as a "part". It is the right size, but low wattage, only 9 watts.
