Default 29g Gbr planted paradise- college graduation special

I have torn down several tanks through the years, there for I found it well suited to make a new master piece to keep me from getting distracted my senior year of college. As this is going to be my last year of school I will be creating this tank and be documenting updates regularly for only 1 YEAR. Simply because when I move to SoCal after school this 29 gallon will be broken down and plants and unwanted flora/fauna will be given away to followers and helpful people on this forum. I really enjoy this forum and would love to help young aquarist like my self out especially when ur ballin on a budget college student hahaha jk! In advance thanks for your help

It will be My first time keeping German blue rams and im up for the challenge. I started this thread to both help with equipment and set up decisions.

Equipment-
Nova extreme 30 inch fixture dual bulb t5 fixture.
-paintball co2 set up. Which I hVe never used
-powerheads 1-2 koralia nano powerheads.

Substrate- fluval flora/ ecocomplete/ fluorite substrate. I'm torn also! I currently am using fluval flora in my biocube 14 and the plants seem to be really responding. I also have experience with ecocomplete. Just interested in keeping parameters in my tank as balanced as possible for the sensitive gbr.

Question!? For filtration I was REALLY wanting to use and build a DIY SUMP. But I plan on using a co2 paintball setup. From my research this style filtration will waste co2? That leads me to part 2 of the question. I have my old xp2 filter, this would be ideal for co2 system? I'm torn and would enjoy some feedback please 😃

flora/fauna-
Some kind of shrimp ( larger so rams don't kill it ) I only have had experience with ghost and cherry shrimp so maybe might try bamboo shrimp IDK WOULD LOVE INPUT
-fish- couple gbr's, Cory cats or loaches if I decide to not use shrimp, bristlenose pleco, Ottosinclus 2-3, and well looking for some mid water fish maybe rummy nose tetras or neon tetras.

Once again I am trying to make this a fun thread even though this is a simpleISH tank haha. The official start update will be August 1st. And will be torn down end of May next year. In the month of may the breakdown and giveaway will begin.
Also if anyone wants to sell me some plants or has stock for decent prices I would love to buy some new stock. To supplement my plant needs even further than my personal plant stock/ collection. Thanks! As u can tell in very excited to graduate and have a beautiful fully planted gbr JUNGLE

Your sump will work with c02, you can insert the c02 line in to the intake of the return line.
Shrimp amano should get big enough to not be a snack.

It's not going to waste co2? Well that's good news hahahaha. Also sumps for reefs have deep sand beds for filtration. For fresh water should I use like a deep gravel? Or sand? What would be more beneficial. Also I will be fully planting it and it will probably house shrimp and livebearers. I'm stoked now I need to make a thread on how to build the damn thing

Try lava rock with a particle size of about 1/2", +/-. It has a huge amout of surface area for biofilm.
