Default Open top for Aqueon Coralife 05618?

Ok, so I'm trying to bring down the total cost of everything I need for a 20 gallon long I am planning. Would it be fine to use the Aqueon Coralife 05618 with an open top? It doesn't have legs but these metal mounts that hook on to the sides of the tank. It has an acrylic protector over the lights, but I am kind of worried. Am I being paranoid? I am trying to save money, but don't want a fire hazard either.

BTW this will be a shrimp only tank.

I say run it! I have been running a 250 Metal halide HQI pendant about 7" above my water line for quite some time with no issues. I simply made sure the fixture wouldnt be exposed to splashing water. As far as humidity damage/corrosion I have not witnessed anything significant so far.

I'm really thinking about it. The thing is I won't have 7 inches of space between the water and light. Would definitely like some more feedback on this.

Whats the distance from waterline to the protective cover on the fixture?

I'm guessing about an inch or so. It's probably not wise to do, so I'll most likely end up getting a glass top. This tank setup is ending up being more expensive than I expected when I bought it! lol

That should work. I have an Aqueon dual T5 fixture sitting on the top of the 10gal fry tank and there arent any issues. It also has an acrylic cover and I keep the water level high so it doesnt splash any.

If you really want to be sure you're safe, put a GFCI (Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter) on the line that feeds the aquarium. You can get one that replaces a regular wall outlet for less than $20.
