Nice find, mudboots. Indian pipe is neat stuff.

I've only seen it once before my self.

The only other place I have ever seen it was in books. This was during the Wisconsin Trip we took to Manitou Falls, though I'm guessing Melinda and the kids never realized why I thought it was soooooo cool to see it there.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Indian_pipe

I've usually only seen a few at a time as well. Quite a few in Cook Forest State Park in PA, but in Connecticut I saw a patch of maybe a hundred!

Indian Pipe is always a treat to see! I've seen big patches of it in the Appalachians, but it's uncommon and usually only a few in a spot here in my neck of the woods.

Just to return to the original question briefly. It never hurts to ask and also check your states DNR website. Also there may be shoreline restoration or other such projects occurring which are not posted. Additionally many plants are easily cultivated by cuttings and in these cases a few cuttings is much less destructive then yanking an entire plant out.

i live here in south florida and ive collected several species. i never had a problem collecting and have friends who collect also. some of the species i have collected are ludwigia repens, bacopa monneri and carolina, hair grass, purple cabomba, and rotala indicia. its awesome seeing them in the canals in large groups but the only problem are the gators. have to be very cautious.

Mosquitos are indeed a 'danger' for me as well. The cloudy days are worst. Another annoying thing is falling into the water, or walking through some sort of sedge or cattail and ending up getting a soaked foot. But I still persevere!

Never ran into any authority for collecting species, although I feel habitat destructive sometimes because I have collected and killed callitriche species and potamogeton praelongis several times.

Luckily, most of the species are fairly common and there are no invasive species up in the northern half of Alberta.
