Default Two varieties of L. palustris in Mississippi?

I have seen these and photographed them before. I am assuming they are both L. palustris, but I don't know for sure. The more common one tends to produce narrow leaves when submersed and when it is cool. It also tends to be redder. The less common one does not change leaf shape much when submersed and it tends to stay green. Some pictures:

Taken 12/23/11:

The plant in the upper right corner has got to be genetically different from the others.

The difference between the red ones with smaller leaves and the green ones with larger leaves is especially apparent in the shaded portion of the picture.

Today I collected both of them, gave them the bleach treatment (2 min.) and they are now planted. We will see if they continue to look different under aquarium conditions.

I'm sure they will end up being the same. I have seen L. palustris grow lanceolate leaves like that as well (early in the year in cool water), but it ended up looking just like the rest of it later on.

I am Indiana and I think that most ditches around here have some.

here is a pic of my l. palustris. It looks very much like your "more rare" variety.

I wondered if someone would notice that. It is another Ranunculus species, probably Ranunculus sceleratus, very common in central Mississippi. It likes wet areas, but I am pretty sure it only tolerates being submersed and has no potential as an aquarium plant. Googling around, I found that it's common name is the cursed buttercup because it is very poisonous. A crushed leaf applied to the skin raises blisters that become long-lasting sores.

No. You have a Hydrocotyle species, possibly H. sibthropioides. The cursed buttercup is definitely not in the aquarium trade!
