There must be something i'm not getting but why dont you just use individual airline tubing check valves on the black tubing VERY early on, at the bottom, so you can cover them up with gravel?? besides they only cost like $1.50 each.
I like the ball type check valve, sorta like the intake on the fluval 40x series. Should be easy as pie to maintain, just an occasional wipe down to remove any slime/algae buildup.
Hmm.. you can also just connect the outlet of a canister filter directly to that splitter on the bottom. Some canister filters like the eheim 2231 have in-built check valves. This would ensure both filtration and no overflow with out clunky tubes all over..
Actually, I've been pondering this for a while. Last week I decided to ditch the infinity aspect to this as I couldn't get around the scenario of it backflowing. Will post pics of the set up this weekend.
If you're concerned about backflow from a power failure, what about a UPC/battery backup? I have an APC brand UPC rated for 2 hours that I got at Comp USA that I run my 110 gal through. So far, we haven't had a failure last longer than the battery.
It's actually kinda weird to be eating dinner cooked on a camp stove by the light of the aquarium.
