Sorry to bring up this old post but I wanted to give it some closure.

I never ended up setting this aquarium up. I still have it though.

I know it might be very late, or you have probably tried these as well, but this type of check valve I used for my ponds suction hoses end. This only lets the water out of the pond, and when the electrics are out the water pressure closes the tube so the water does not escape back into the pond.

You might be able to use this upsidedown,on the base of your nano.So when the electrics are out the water pressure would stop the flow.
But you will have to fit the power head outlet completely to this valves inlet.

Thanks for the kind comments.

At this time, I just don't have the time or energy to restart/finish the project. I am debating doing a handmade acrylic aquarium over the holidays though.

I discarded the use of check valves because they are not reliable. If it breaks (and it will sooner or later), you have a flood. A flood means that I get to go sleep in the dog house. It's very hot where I live so that's not good.

Saw this on PT, looks like someone did a similar infinity edge tank. I don't know about the branches glued outside but the rest of it looks interesting!

Actually, Volatile, thanks. You've got the answer. Or, rather, they did. I can use a closed system to keep the water from back siphoning all over the floor.

I'll give it more thought and change my original design accordingly. I may give this another shot now.

Thanks!

Yeah seriously. You've come so far with the work you've done. Most of the hard work is already out of the way. Once you get your hands on a canister/sump, I'd imagine that you're practically there. Don't give up now. The work you've done has been very inspiring indeed.
