I think it would be best at about half the height of the Rotala and I think you're spot on about needing a vertical accent like a grass. I must admit my first thought was that a small Narrow Java fern would look great tied onto something small and tucked behind the rock.

I wish my nano looked half as good...
Thanks Ed. Well as I said it's so easy to experiment with these little tanks, so I'll keep doing just that. I agree with you about the height of the Rotala, It's due for a full trim anyway.

Took some advice here and added some stems to the right side of the tank. I think it works. I might change to a grassy plant soon, but I do like the color of the rotala.

Looking great HoC!

I think it looks much better, but I agree about trying something grassy, or at least with more linear leaves. Shame you can't get something with the colour of the Rotala as I agree with you on the colour!

Ed thanks for the comments. Yeah I do like the color and I tried to trim the rotala so it slopes down into the low point between the rock and the riccia in the middle. I'll probably keep it this way for a while and then replace with a thin-blade type plant.

I kinda polished it off with a black background (not sure if I like) and a name.

Then I went about changing it somewhat with the Rotala R going across the whole back and moved the rocks around a bit. The riccia in the midground still has to grow in. The main rock is interesting because it looks like sand running onto the beach. One day I'll do a grassy background.
