As far as killifish, there are so many kinds, from annuals to some that live several years. There are extremely shy (they only zip out to grab a piece of food) killis, and bold killis. Personally, I recommend a pair of Aphyosemion australe (the orange variety shows up well). They are fairly tolerant of a range of conditions, can be kept in containers as small as 2 gallons, and bold enough to take food (such as frozen bloodworms) from your fingers.
I second the embers. Though they might not school as nicely in a 5g, they look GREAT.

For a nano fish in a 2.5 gallon, you cannot go wrong with strawberry rasboras! Max size is .8 inch! What's amazing is that they will school somewhat in a 2.5 gallon.

I know this is an older thread but I just wanted to say, go with the dwarf puffers. They have so much more personality than almost any other fish. I have 4 in a 25g with otos and amano shrimp. When I walk towards the tank they come out and greet me at the glass, and they go nuts for live black worms. They are also like little helicoptors, they can swim backwards and sideways which is cool to watch. I would say to get two because mine have paired up and they seem to be comforted by each other, although a 5.5 is pushing it for two. Just make sure that only one has a dark line on it's belly as that would be the male and 2 males in a tank that small is asking for trouble. Like I said you won't be sorry.
