Default ADA substrate

I'm going to be moving in the next month or so, which I see as a prime time to redo my layout and substrate. I am thinking of doing ADA substrate this time. I am a newbie to ADA stuff, and I couldn't find the information on ADG's website - maybe I just didn't look hard enough. Any suggestions are welcome. What do I need besides Aquasoil, and approximately how much Aquasoil for a 46-gallon aquarium? Does anyone remember the white goopy stuff one of the guys was showing us last month at the meeting, that you put in a special bag inside your filter to avoid the green bloom?

Thanks for all input!

Mendi, That white stuff is Seachem "Purigen". Its used in your filter to make your water crystal clear. It adsorbs a lot of different organic chemicals like tannins. To determine how much Aquasoil and PowerSand to use it would be a good idea to mention your tank dimensions. Check out this ADG link its gives an approximate idea.

Or you can call Jeff and he would be the best person to help you out. You could also use Tourmaline BC and Bacter 100.

Mendi, honestly speaking, you can get away with just using the Aquasoil. I've grown plants just fine with AS alone. But for a complete line-up of ADA stuff in the order of their usages, here it goes:

1st layer---spread all the powdery stuff(penacW and penacP, Bacter 100, Clear super, Tourmaline BC, etc...)

2nd layer---Power Sand(or if you use Power Sand Special you can skip on Bacter 100 and Clear super as it contains both)

3rd layer---Aquasoil. Depending on the size of your tank as well as personal aesthetics, some will add a layer of Aquasoil Powder just to make everything look finer and smooth out any areas which might look a little jagged or rough.

And there ya have it. Remember you do NOT need nor is it a MUST-have on any of these items, save the Aquasoil. You CAN grow stuff fine just using AS. But using them will only better the results and won't hurt

Good luck and show us your design soon!

BTW, will you use other ADA equipments as well, such as the lighting and filtration stuff like lily pipes?

Thanks so much for all the info! Right now I am only doing ADA substrate - tight budget! It's all I really need right now anyway. As I have opportunity, I will probably collect more ADA items, like one of the beautiful tanks!

Will the Purigen absorb ferts too? Will I not need to add nutrients for awhile anyway?

Im using straight ADA Amazonia substrate, no extras, and Im pleased with the results. I like how it holds down any plant, even HC, that I have read that is difficult to keep from floating up. I also think it contributes to a low PH. After a 50% WC, my PH is always down to 6.6 in a couple days. Im going to start a 3 gal nano soon, and will be using ADA substrates in it.

Purigen will not alter the ferts and works wonderful at clearing the water!
