I have been searching around to find the best price on Harlequins (Rasbora heteromorpha) and haven’t had much luck. I'm looking to purchase about 40 of them to restock my tank (everything died when I went on vacation) the store closest to me sells them for 4 bucks a piece but I am looking for something more economical. So does anyone know of any place that sells them real cheap (but also healthy)? Also does anyone have any experience with Espe's Rasbora (Rasbora espei)? They look very similar but seem a bit cheaper. My main focus is to find a fish that likes to make really tight schools.
I actually prefer the Espei rasbora. They seem to have colors that pop a little more.
Also, buying 40 of them should get you a discount from your LFS. Ask them what it would cost for you to get 50 of them on their next order - and bagged separately from everything else. Then, find out when the order is coming in and be there when things get opened. Don't let them open that bag, just take it home and acclimate them to your tank. The 50 is for any fish that might die.
Another thing to consider is a wholesaler. Some of them will deal directly with the public, but with a certain minimum order. 50 fish might be close to the minimum. get some others in NASH to join in on the buy and you can get a decent number of fish at a great price.
I have Rasbora Espeis. I got a small shoal of 8 (all they had) from Petsmart for $2.99 each. They tend to play and explore in smaller groups (2-4 fish) usually, but always shoal up as a unit when startled. Sometimes they all shoal up anyway for a while but break into smaller groups soon enough. The favorite game they have is "try to swim up the eheim discharge tube". They like a strong current, it seems.
Fish gallery has a good number (40-50) of Rasbora Hets right now. I dont remember the price though. Probably around $1.99 each, and they generally give bulk discounts on fish, like 10 for $15.
Yeah I think they're best best deal was like 10 for 20 bucks when I went on sunday. I think I might go with espeis if I can get a lot of them. It dosnt sound like there is any difference in how they school. It's time consuming to drive down to Houston and I hate the extortion and crappy selection of my closest stores. How would I go about finding a wholesaler?
