Default Hello

Just wanted to stop in and say hi. I was over at Houston Aquarium Warehouse last weekend w/ Danny's nephew to get some pointers on building a stand for my gf's tank and witnessed him basically whip up the thing in record time lol The man's a beast. Since then it's been sanded, painted, had the doors mounted, and had the tank moved to it. It looks awesome. Thanks again!

I also had the chance to talk to Thanh about planted tanks etc. He forced me to come here and introduce myself

Thx for the welcome I've known about NASH for a while through APC and HoustonFishBox, but hadn't really talked to any members until recently. Everyone seems pretty cool so far. One step at a time, Thanh

I own 2 small planted tanks right now (3 gal and 10 gal), and have never stepped into the high-tech side of the hobby. Both of my tanks are NPTs so the plant growth is nowhere near as fast as setups using co2, ferts, etc, but they've been chugging along even though I've been neglecting them lately (I've been busy w/ other stuff but I plan to get back into it soon hopefully).

Some of the plants I have currently growing in these small tanks are:

Marsilea minuta
Lilaeopsis brasiliensis
wisteria
Rotala rotundifolia
Rotala sp. 'green'
Anubias nana 'petite'
subwassertang
HM
Hygrophila polysperma 'sunset'
downoi
Crypt lucens
Crypt parva

I definitely plan on going high-tech on my next tank. Just wondering, are there any NASH members who prefer the low-tech route?

Low tech----throw everything into the pond and watch the magic happen.

Seriously, though, I am growing pretty much everything in my pond including the tough Marsilea and HC and both are spreading like wildfire. Low tech is doable, provided u give the what the plants need in terms of nutrition and lighting. Since it is low tech, make sun light your best friend. Nutrition here I am also including carbon which is in the form of organic and NOT the pressurized gas CO2(as u wanted a low tech). The easiest route to provide carbon is Seachem's Excel. Depending on what you are growing, dose at least every other day to make it a steady source for the plants.
Bottom line: Depend on what plants you are trying to grow. Some plants will grow much easier than others in low tech.

That would be in a minority. Most of member's tank is like on steroid! For a small setup, it's not too pricey so go for it.

Hey there ItsDubC! You might as well just give in now. The high tech route will get you sooner or later!

Ya I like the challenge of NPTs in using natural processes to achieve balance in an aquarium, but I always knew I'd want to try high-tech at some point because certain plants and scaping styles don't work well in NPTs. For example, iwagumi NPTs are practically unheard of.

That's not really true. How else would the Japanese have been doing it for the past millenium It is simply a common misconception people have taken up that iwagumi can only be achieved via high tech. But this isn't so. Iwagumi simply means Rock Grouping(Iwa=Rock/Stone; Gumi=Group of). You do not need to have 'high tech' tanks to keep it. Just do what you do now with low tech. When the time is 'right' you will make the jump. Trust me; I did C'mon, NASH bros'n sis, low tech isn't so bad. Say it with me now

With that being said, however, once you hope on the road of high tech, you will never turn back But I do believe it is an important experience/journey to go thru in terms of aquatic plant keeping. Gotta have one in order to appreciate the other.
