Default how do you know when to trim?

My rotala's are about 2 weeks old now and I am just wondering how you know when to trim and replant? How dense can you plant the tips that you trimmed? My stems are sort of growing funny...they grow straight up for about 5" and then start growing parallel to the bottom...straight towards the front of the tank (so if you were looking at the plants from the front, they would be growing towards you.) So anyways, sorry for that tangent, how do you know when to trim?!?

thank you all

sean

Rotala rotundifolia and sp green both grow like you described for me. The grow about 2/3 of the way to the top, then make a right turn and grow horizontally. I find I need to trim them very soon after the turn or they quickly begin to shade the whole tank. But, you can trim them anytime you want to, and either replant the cuttings or just let the "stumps" branch out. They seem to adapt to whatever you do with them.
