Default a few questions

i am new to planted aquariums, i was wondering what you thought of sand as a substrate to sustain planted aquatica as the person i purchased my tank from suggested it and uses it himself in several of his own.

i have every intent of using a CO2 setup for obvious reasons, my question here lies with can i use paintball co2 canisters instead of those designed for the co2 setups that are purchsable?
ive purchased an 88g setup but forgot to get a canister and i wasnt sure if the threads on the canisters were the same or if it was even a viable option.

any help, assistance and indeed suggestions would be very welcome and gratefully recieved.
regards,
Machouga

i forgot to mention my aquarium is 180l, i know the 88g co2 setup is slightly under the suggestion for the size tank but i didnt think it would be of huge affect to the aquarium.

i would be interested if anyone can advise about the co2 canisters, the paintball ones are literally half the price so for obvious reasons i would like to use them if at all possible.
