Question new rare echinodorus species

hello, i saw two very strange enchinodorus species for sale on e-bay one wqas called the Echinodorus DEEP PURPLE, and the other was called Echinodorus Crimson Sails' and i was wondering if these were just old common plants with new names or if they are new legitimate cultivars or hybrids if you will. if anyone has any experience with either of these two plants or can vouch for their legitimacy it would make me feel way better on spending $60 for two sword plants : )

heres a pic and a very vague description on what the seller had to say about each plant:

Echinodorus Deep Purple is a rare type of Echinodorus sword plant that is cultivated. Rarely seen in most aquarium stores and hard to find. Each of these plants are sold in 5cm pots which can be removed to be planted in the aquarium. It also flowers to release seeds however propagation is mainly via runners.

Echinodorus Criminson Sails is an uncommon cultivated plant from Germany that is rarely seen in most aquarium stores. This plant distinguish itself from other echinodorus plant because the leaves of this plant is wavy shaped that resembles boat sails in the wind hence the name of the plant.

thanks for looking

I know 'Deep Purple' is a legitimate cultivar. I really wouldn't know what it's worth. Is this a USA ebay auction you saw? Do you have a link you can share with us to the auction?

The wavy ones (Crimson Sails) looks like Echinodorus "Okie Frenzy" from Indonesian cultivar (Mr. Okie Tanujaya). Okie's leaves are also wavy, but it has narrower leaves. The leaves are very red and get greener as they matured. I'll post the pics soon.

The "Crimson Sails" cultivar looks like a wavy, intensely red "Kleiner Bar". How large does the "Crimson Sails" get?

Hiho,
i have those two in my tank:

> "(..)if these were just old common plants with new names"

No, they are a new variety by the german plant breeder firm 'Zoologica'.
If you want to read (ger) something about them or just look at pictures go here
http://www.zoologica.de/
("Sortiment Arten und Zuchtformen" -> "Pflanzen-Portraits", Sorry, i can't link directly)
A lot of picture you can find here:
http://www.wolfgang-ise.de/echinodor...ie/frs_gal.htm

> How large does the "Crimson Sails" get?

not large, max. 40cm

> "(..)$60 for two sword plants."

I paid 8€ (10USD) for each plant some years ago.

Both plants are easily to grown, they just need bright light
and a lot of fertilizer in the ground to show there colors.
Deep Purple is a kind of sick: the new leafes can go black (!!) to a deep purple to a bloody red and at the end brown. 'Crimson Sails' must ne a new name for the USMarket - here its called as 'Regine Hildebrandt', a very popular female politician in NorthEastGermany which died on cancer .
It grows a bit slowly and (hearsay) doesn't like to get reimplant.

I hope, my schoolenglish wasn't to cruel for you.

bye

I bet it's a new cultivar which started as a Kleiner Bar crossed w/ something else... KBs don't get very big.

I miss my E. rubin.
