Default Concern regarding PAPAS presentations

Perhaps I am nitpicking a bit, but I would like to discuss presentations in the club. In my opinion, a presentation is when one member presents the information about a specific topic to the rest of the group. I feel the presentations we have had for the club have been discussions between all members rather than an actual presentation. Should we maybe say that we are going to have a discussion about a certain topic instead of saying that there will be a presentation? Recently a fellow PAPAS member and I were talking about presentations, and we felt that all of them so far seemed a bit unorganized. I totally understand that it is a small club and that people are going to be interrupting and talking over others, but some guide lines should be set on how to give a presentation if we are going to continue to refer to them in this manner. The biggest reason I felt that I should bring this up is because I do not want to mislead any new members by saying that we will be having a presentation when it will actually be a discussion. They will probably expect something entirely different then what we actually generate. I feel that if we are going say that we have monthly "presentations" then we need to make them more organized and set some guide lines. Failing to do this may create negative feedback for the club.

Your thoughts,
Tim

I don't think you're nitpicking at all, Tim. It's incumbent on the "presenter" to make sure that his talk is organized, accurate, and informative. There should be some minimum advance prep work and research done.
At this stage, though, I see the presenter's role as that of leader of the discussion. His talk should set the table for an open Q & A. After his talk, he should open things up to the Group, I think, and make sure that the discussion remains focused.
As the Club grows, the format of these talks will evolve. Right now it's important that everyone comes away with good, basic plant growing knowledge.

I agree with the both of yinz. More organized is better. Perhaps when announcing the agenda for a future meeting it should read something like this. Presentation by (Speaker) on (Subject) followed by a roundtable discussion, followed by plant swap/auction. The subject of the roundtable disscussion would be the speakers presentation and any other previously agreed on or previously suggested subject. Possibly a short portion of each meeting could be devoted to members questions and comments. If these questions/ comments can not be dealt with quickly then they could be the subject of a future presentation or disscussion, or it could be agreed to bring it up on our APC forum.

Great, Earl. We can start the process this coming meeting on the 8th.

Presentation by Bob Vivian on Aquascaping to be followed by a round table discussion. This will be followed by a plant exchange (dollar donation per bag to go to the Club)

Feb's meeting (Feb. 5th) to include a presentation by Bill Wells on the subject of low tech tanks to be followed by a round table discussion. A plant exchange will follow.

Is good?

Bob

I thought that we agreed that it would be an auction for the plants. Other than that it looks good.

You may be right, Sam. I'm confused on what the Club actually decided at the last meeting. We'll clear it up next Sun.
Are you coming?

Yeah, I'll probably be there. I've been out of town for the past 2 weekends so it really depends on how much work I get done around the house before the meeting.

I'll try to let you know when I know for sure.

I also think Tim is correct. I think that in the past, we've not decided early enough what the topic will be. If we do decide on something, we'll have to consider exactly how it will be presented. I've been the speaker for GPASI twice, but I had a screen, projector, etc both times. What are we shooting for here?

Discussions and open discussions aren't necessarily a bad thing.

I think a meeting where we rescape or set up a new tank for someone would be a good one.

great idea fella's. I would like to see some well done presentations. Length doesn't matter, just the material being presented would be nice in an orderly fashion, with Q&A, and the roundtable discussion.. great idea

Down the line, i'll probably need a tank rescaped if people are willing to come out to Westmoreland County

As for presentations - would anyone actually put together a powerpoint presentation for the meetings? (i'm assuming Cavan would since he's done so in the past for GPASI). I'm thinking about getting a projector for my sister's wedding this summer, if it could actually be used in other purposes other than that week (and for me to play video games on the wall when I'm bored) it would give more incentive to consider it.
