I recently played musical fish and musical hardscape to accommodate a group of Checkerboard cichlids who didn't appreciate the nice home I thought I'd fashioned for them in the 35g natural soil tank. After all my rescaping work was complete (at least my downstairs tanks

) I settled on purchasing a pair of Apistogramma agassizii to be the new stars in the 35g.
Well, Knock My Socks Off! I'm stunned! I bought a pair of A. agassizi for my 35g hex tank on Tuesday night (2/20). Today, Friday (2/23), I see my new little lady guarding a batch of eggs!!!!!! WOW! Yikes, she sure didn't waste any time

!
Although I realize this probably indicates that the fish were in a good, healthy condition when I got them; still, I can't help but feel somewhat proud and vindicated! Those checkerboards didn't approve of my little hex tank; but I feel that my agassizii lady is saying, "Great job, Kate! This new home is just perfect!"
I sure don't know if I'm ready to try tending fry, or if I'll even get any to hatch with my regular tap water. Or if she'd have any luck keeping the three emperor tetras away. However it sure is exciting and interesting. Quite often this aquarium plant and fishkeeping can have it's sets of challenges. Other times there are the rewards, like this one! Yeah!
